Evaluating The Opening Of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Explain how the construction of this female character may contribute to this being an effective thriller opening.

At the beginning of the sequence, the old male is very carefully opening a parcel with white clean gloves and a small penknife. This conveys that he knows what's within the parcel and has to be very cautious with it. As he takes out the picture and looks at where it's from, he sits down and stares at it. This shows that he has some form of connection with it. The camera then zooms out and he begins crying, which confirms the significance of the parcel and creates an enigma. When the camera zooms out, more of the setting is revealed to the spectator. It shows lots of antique items such as the large oak table and paintings on the wall, connoting that this man is wealthy.

The female, on the other hand, is represented in an completely contrasting way.
The spectators can clearly see that this is a female character from the body shape and style of movement when she is walking. She's wearing a black hoodie with dark jeans, which subverts the pink feminine gender stereotype. She walks quickly with her hands in her pockets and doesn't stop to speak to anyone. This suggests that she does not want to be seen and isn't trying to impress anyone. This then also creates an enigma as the spectators question if she is the girl with the dragon tattoo?

  1. "The ECU of his hands emphasises the care. The very slow pace also conveys care and caution. It is also silent. The props of the gloves (the kind we associate with handling antiquities and things of value) also communicate care."

You are being too general with your analysis. Refer to more terminology and consider how all the technical codes work to communicate the meaning that you are taking from the text. When he cries, this is diegetic sound, but also, the cry is a certain type of cry - not desperate, but more a whimper, so not really a shock perhaps! Also, the director wants you to hear this, so the diegetic sound is amplified.

    Hope this helps.

More terminology and deeper analysis of the HOW.
